it's been a while

We've been watching a lot of TV on DVD lately.
Heroes season 1 when we have a disc of it from Netflix and Grey's Anatomy season 3 when we don’t. 5* for both, but for wildly different reasons!
We watched a few episodes of Monk season 1 tonight. It's ok, 3*, but we probably won't watch any more. With as much TV on DVD as we have to watch, you don't waste time with anything less than 4*. LOL!
On deck . . . Stargate Atlantis season 3, and CSI seasons 3-6.

As for actual MOVIES...
300 was quite cool, and it seriously grew on me the more I thought about it afterward. 4*
Smokin' Aces was ok. 3*
Flywheel kicked me right in the ass, spiritually. It seriously was part of the life change I find myself now going through. 5* for the message and the way it moved me, probably 2* for quality.
Freedom Writers was extremely moving. I cried for the entire second hour of it! 5*
An Unfinished Life was really good. 4*
Wild Hogs was funny. 3*
Doom was ok, for a scifi monster movie, even though monster movies aren't really my thing. 3*
Unaccompanied Minors was pretty lame. Brian says he loved it, but I think that's only to annoy me. 2*
On deck . . . 300 (again), Shooter (again), and Down to You.

I think that about covers it... for now.

once more unto the breech

Holy shit, it's been over a month since I posted what we've been watching around here!

It never fails, if I don't stay right on top of the movie posts I'll end up leaving something out. Last time, or the time before, it was The Saint with Val Kilmer. I don't know how I forgot about it either, because that's one that I really liked. 4*.

Ok, let's kick this in gear...

TVD

We finished season 1 of Heroes, season 3 of Grey's Anatomy, and season 3 of Stargate:Atlantis. 5* for all! Well, maybe not Grey's.

Come to think of it, definitely not Grey's! I swear, season 3 was just an experiment to see how many ways they could have each character cheat on their significant other. So sad, because I used to love that show. I think I'd give season 3 of Grey's a 3* just because of all the cheating. Scale that waaaay back and I could give it a 5*. Big difference there, I know, but yes, it was THAT bad.

Anyway... right now we're watching season 3 of CSI, which is - of course - really good. 4*.

MOVIES

Picking up where we left off back in early October... 300, Shooter, and Down to You were on deck. We did end up watching all of those. It was my second viewing of 300 and Shooter (Staci's first). 5* and 4.5* respectively.

As it turns out, it was our second time watching Down to You as well! The further into it we got, the more we remembered having seen it years ago. Everything was familiar as we watched, but we couldn't remember what happened next. In the end it didn't really matter, nothing happens! 2*.

We watched Mickey and Waiting... one weekend.

Waiting... was pretty funny. 3*. So far we've liked Ryan Reynolds in everything we've seen him in. Still though, whenever I see him I can't help but think of Chevy Chase! He bares a striking resemblance, and his humor is very similar.

Mickey was good. I don't really have anything to say against it! 3*.

Another weekend in October we saw Mr. Brooks, Next, and The Invisible.

Mr. Brooks was creepy, but not scary, and very good. 4*.

Next was... different. Different, but good. As I recall the ending kinda sucked. It jumped around in time a lot and that took some getting used to. And just when I was used to it they threw a monkey wrench into everything and I was messed up again. If the premise sounds good to you, give it a shot and see what you think, then come back and tell me about it! I say 3.5*, but I rounded up to 4 when I rated it on Netflix.

The Invisible has a pretty good premise to it as well, and also has an ending I didn't like! The rating stays the same too... 3.5*.

With winter coming the kids will be forced to stay indoors more on the weekends, so I thought I'd start renting some documentaries about nature to watch on Sabbath afternoons. Last weekend was the first test run, and I must say it went quite well! We watched Deep Blue, and it was amazing! 5*! You have to check it out.

I think it was Sunday night that we watched Fracture. I really liked it! It's one of those who-done-it movies where you're shown what happened and then get to watch the one character try to figure it out while the other character tries to outsmart him. 4*.

Last night we watched Reign Over Me. It was quite good. Very good, actually. I got a couple of decent chuckles out of it, but it's most definitely a drama. Adam Sandler really impressed me in this movie. It's kinda slow going, it IS a drama after all, but I thought it was worth it in the end. I laughed AND cried; you can't ask much more out of a drama than that! 4*.

And that officially catches us up. WHEW! Can you believe it took me two days to write this all up?!

I must do better next time.

told you so

I told you that I'd forget some movies, and I did.

I read about Disturbia when it was first out in theaters and wasn't interested at all. But M saw it and said it was really good, so when she bought the DVD I borrowed it. Turns out I really liked it! 4*.

And of course I bought Transformers! We watched it twice in one week. hehe Love it. 5*.

Ok, I think that's it.

December 6, 2007

crime scene fool

Been watching a lot of CSI. I think we're in season 5 now. Season 4 was, of course, 5* good!

Earlier this week (possibly even last weekend!) we watched Kissing a Fool. I think I've seen it before. It's ok I guess, nothing to write home about though. 3*

On deck: MirrorMask.

December 9, 2007

three strikes

Saturday night Staci had to sing at a women's ministry thing, so I was at home with the kids. Shortly after getting on the computer, the pastor came online. We started talking and he invited the kids and I to come over and hang out, watch a movie, eat some popcorn. So we headed into town.

We watched MirrorMask. Yes, I watched MirrorMask with my new pastor! LOL Too bad it sucked. Ugh. We had a good time though. 1.5*

When the girls got home we ran for some pizza and then watched The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe. That took us to midnight and then we went home. 4*

Today we've watched quite a bit of CSI which is, of course, great. But then we watched Here on Earth. Not only was it a teen movie, it was a sappy teen movie! 2.5*

And now we're watching Rescue Dawn, which isn't as fun as I had hoped. It isn't bad, but it isn't real exciting either. 3*

So I guess what it amounts to is I'm not picking really good lately! I need to pick some big, explosive, summer type movies for a while or something! heh-heh

December 25, 2007

amazingly little dvd watching

It's been awhile, but there really isn't much to post about on the DVD front. In fact, the majority have been watched in the last few days.

There has, of course, been more CSI. We're into season 6 now. Season 5 was really really good. 5*

Staci put an old Sherlock Holmes TV show in her Netflix queue and we watched disc 1 of that. It was ok, but not something we felt like continueing, so she took the rest out of the queue I think. 2.5*

I recently bought Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This was my least favorite of the books, but the movie was quite good. 4*

I also bought The Bourne Ultimatum recently, but haven't been able to get around to watching it until today. I suggested it last night after we opened gifts with L&J and J&C, but none of them had seen ANY of the Bourne movies. Can you believe that?! So we watched The Bourne Identity last night. Today, after brunch down at L&J's, they came up and we watched The Bourne Supremacy and Ultimatum back-to-back. 4, 4.5, and 5*

Right now we're watching The Day After Tomorrow. 4*

Ok, so it's not "amazingly little dvd watching" but more like "amazingly more dvd watching than I thought"! :-D

On deck... Waitress, Black Book, and One Last Thing.

January 4, 2008

watching... always watching

I actually jotted down these titles and their links FIVE DAYS AGO, but I'm just now getting around to finishing it off and posting it. P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C!

Way back when, when Mom was still here visiting, she was looking for something to watch and we ended up watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Probably my favorite Indy movie, but just by a nose. 4.5*

Sunday was a bigtime movie watching day because I was tired of my Netflix rentals sitting there and mocking me!

First up was Black Book, which we invited Larry & Jerilyn to watch with us. Click the link and read the description and you might be able to guess why. Anyway... It's a 2.5 hour long movie... IN GERMAN! No kidding. Subtitles all the way. It sucked at first, but the movie was so good that at some point I didn't even realize I was reading them anymore. No kidding. 4*

After that L&J were talking about going down to their house and getting some stuff done while I was loading up Waitress. An hour and a half later, there they still were, sitting on the couch! LOL Another good movie that I wasn't the least bit disappointed in watching, but I'm only gonna give it 3*.

Finally we finished things off with One Last Thing. L&J actually did make it back home before I started this one, but just barely! I'm tellin' ya, I was serious about getting these three movies watched!! Now, if you follow the link and read the description on this one it sounds like a teen comedy in the same vein as The Girl Next Door. It isn't. There were some funny spots, but it was so far from the cliche comedy that I could hardly believe it. It actually turned out to be a pretty decent drama. Not my favorite movie by any stretch, but I'd recommend it. 3*

Since that crazy Sunday run the only thing we've watched is CSI, and I'm happy to report that we finished season 6! As long as we've been cranking through these episodes it's next to impossible to rate differences between the particular seasons. Let's just say we love the show and call it good. K? K. 5*

Of course, 3 more Netflix rentals showed up in the mail today! You can bet I'll do my best to have them all watched by Monday. heh-heh

On deck:
The Nanny Diaries, Stardust, and The Unit: Season 1: Disc 1

Oh, and my DVD Collection list has been updated. (link at upper left of page)

mission: possible

So, I did indeed get those 3 DVDs watched before getting lost in the work week.

Last night Staci and I were up late playing our respective computer games. "Late" is the wrong word really... "early" would be more accurate. At any rate, I burned out eventually and Staci was still going strong, so I popped in disc 1 season 1 of The Unit. Three hours later... first DVD down and 2 to go! I realize it's only the first 4 episodes of the first season, but I already really like it. 4*

We woke up at noon, returned a couple missed calls, ate some cereal, started a load of laundry and kicked back to watch Stardust. I think it's safe to say that Stardust is the new Princess Bride! 4.5*

Last, and least, The Nanny Diaries. Scarlett Johansson is a hottie and all, but wasn't enough to save this movie. 2.5*

January 7, 2008

filler

Last night we had a little time to fill before going to bed but not quite enough for a movie. Perfect for a little TV on DVD! Unfortunately I have nothing from Netflix right now and we've finished everything we own. As good a time as any to restart Alias from the beginning! heh-heh

Tonight is kinda the same situation, but with enough time for a movie. I've already played my game a bit and gotten past the spot I was stuck on, so now it's time for something else. Perfect opportunity to get one of those DVDs I bought and never watched out of the way! And that's how I finally ended up watching Wicker Park. It's always sounded like a good movie, so when I saw it in the $5 bin I went ahead and picked it up. Damnit, I wasted $5! 2*

January 11, 2008

surprisingly, not a lot

It was a really light DVD watching week, but only because we sent all 3 Netflix back on Monday and had to wait for three new discs. Usually they go out only one or two at a time so we have a pretty even flow, but not this time.

Funny, it was all TVD this week! I watched a couple more episodes of Alias: Season 1, one episode of Gilmore Girls: Season 7, and four episodes of The Unit: Season 1.

On deck:
War, Dear Frankie, I Am Legand, Alias: Season 5, Gilmore Girls: Season 7, Mind of Mencia: Season 3.

i hate kids (not what you think)

This is a pretty long video, and I don't expect you to watch it all, but you HAVE to watch the first few minutes and skip to the end to watch maybe the last minute. Amazing. Freakin' kids... me hates them!

This one's for you Thorban!

watching... always watching...

  • War
I saw this in Hastings while looking for something else. How did I not hear about a movie with Jason Statham and Jet Li?! As soon as I got home it went on my Netflix queue. It wasn't great, but it was a pretty good action flick, with a twist.
    3.5*
  • Dear Frankie
A nice little drama. Lower budget, foreign (Scottish I think), and no complaints.
    3.5*
  • March of the Penguins
I've had this at home for a long time as part of my winter Sabbath afternoon nature movie watching plan. Can you believe we had over a month with no Sabbath afternoons at home?! Unbelievable. Anyway, we finally watched it and it was really good. I never knew penguins were so amazing!
    4*
  • Perfect Score
Busted this one out for some friends that had never seen it. Laughed my ass off. I really like this movie!
    4*
  • I Am Legend
This movie is still in theaters, but we watched it at home. ;-) Is Wil Smith in anything that's not really good anymore? I think not.
    4*
  • Gilmore Girls season 7
The last season of GG. *sniff* It started out pretty good, got kinda annoying in the middle, and was really good at the end.
    4*
  • Mind of Mencia season 3
Carlos is so freaking funny! I pretty much just watch the stand up intro and skip the rest of the show; I'm not really into the skits so much. But the stand up is so funny!
    4*
  • The Unit season 1
What can I say? I'm not all the way through the season yet, but I continue to really like this show.
    4*
  • The Kiss
Slow, and not really well acted. Skip it.
    2.5*
  • Dragon Wars
Brian loved it, but kids have very forgiving eyes when it comes to movies. Oh. My. Word. This movie is bad on so many levels. Total B-movie. C, actually. It's bad. From the stupid story, to the Tom Cruise M:I-2 wannabe (named Ethan even!), to the bad effects. That's an hour and a half of my life that I won't get back!
    1.5*

    a run of slow movies

I have something I need to be working on, so this isn't really a proper post, just a list of movies i've seen recently and how I rate them. (i almost didn't bother collecting links for them) They've been pretty slow, for the most part. That's not an entirely bad thing, but it's not the greatest either. Anyway...

pirates of the carribean: at world's end - 4*
    i love you to death - 2*
    keeping mum - 3*
    sneakers - 3.5*
    gataca - 3*

Here's a little movie rewiew that Stac & I recorded for Hero. If you're interested, it's about 3 1/2 minutes long and a little over 3MB. Let us know what you think.

he said, she said: vol. 2

Tonight we watched Becoming Jane with Pastor Campbell and Heidi. Afterward we recorded some of our conversation about the movie. If you'd care to listen, it's about 5 1/2 minutes long (5MB).

    March 9, 2008

he said, she said: vol. 3

... in which we prattle on for 8 1/2 minutes about Good Luck Chuck, the new Battlestar Galactica, and 3:10 to Yuma, while Staci is making waffles. :-D Enjoy!

    March 11, 2008

he said, she said: vol. 4
