AT&T ~VS~ Cingular

Could they make it any more difficult? Maybe its just because I have a cold and find it terribly hard to consintrate and think clearly. (and spell)

A while back (last month) Erik's cell phone self-distructed. We didn't have the money to get new ones, or to pay our bill to get new free ones.

We were with AT&T before they were bought by Cingular sometime last year, I think. So our bill has beed caught up. And for the past few days I have been trying to upgrade to get the new free phones and re-sign up for 2 more years of servatude to Cingular. But we are still on the "AT&T side" (their words, not mine) and its difficult.

AND we still had our numbers form Colorado, which appently we can't keep being we are in the Nebrasska service area. So we can't do the upgrade for another 24-48 hours (I'll have to call back), but we did get new numbers. I can't remember what the deal was on Saturday but they had to do something and I had to wait 72 hours to call back.

Saturday I was on the phone with them for about 30 minutes, most of it on hold. Today I was on the phone with them for 45 minutes again most of it on hold. And I have to call back. UGH!! And when I get the new free phones how much you wanna bet I'll have to give them a call again...

And I have to get ahold of I don't know how many people to tell them our new numbers. OY!

Cingular sucks! They are a crappy company who could care less about their customers...at least the front line is.

Our oldest wanted a the new Motorola Razer for Christmas but he is on AT&T. Only Cingular has them. We bought one from Wal-Mart and called to get the phone unlocked (cause each compnay locks the phone to their network) and they said no but you can move off your AT&T account to Cingular (less minutes more money). Wait a sec, isn't Cingular and AT&T the same company? Apaprently not. No thanks.

I went online and bought software to unlock the damn phone. Being an employee for a Telecom vendor I know that you are able to use any GSM phone with any GSM network so I think it's bullshit they lock the phones (unlike Europe).

So phone is unlocked, he's using it on AT&T network (nhyah nhyah Cingular) and the internet connection won't work. Again Cingular told us no and even the AT&T front line said no help we don't offer Razer phones. We found a helpful AT&T tech guy on a forum who helped. Phone works great, son is happy, great Christmas present.

Don't let them talk you into something you don't want. If you have GSM phones and you want to use AT&T instead on Cingular phones, you should be able to. Now free phones are another thing - I have no complaints about being locked into a network if you are getting the phone for free from the provider. But buying the phone outright paying full price ($350 for a Razer) you should be able to use it with whatever provider you want.

sorr this was long - a pet peeve.

You should talk to my dad about the whole ATT/Cingular situation. Unreal. He has had endless problems with them. They charge you all this stuff for switching over to cingular and you have no choice in the matter. My sister got sick of it and just dropped ATT/Cingular and went with T-Mobile like me. Cheaper, better service, and I didn't have to play an arm and a leg for my Razor.

I can't complain a whole lot. We've had more luck, better & cheaper service than when we had Qwest Wireless years ago, who then got bought out by One Touch Wireless & now is Verizon. I haven't tried Verizon since they bought out One Touch, but they SUCKED years ago. AT&T has been good to us until we got the family plan. And it really wasn't AT&T's problem, it was the stupid girl at the local cell phone store that botched the whole thing. But AT&T took a while & a lot of phone calls to get it fixed. We've since gotten better service since Cingular bought out AT&T, but because our contract with AT&T isn't up yet, we can't offically switch over to Cingular. They actually (in our area) have more service converage for a cheaper price than AT&T. So, this fall we will offically be switching over to Cingular, I'm sure.
