I have noticed recently that I have a ton of comments. Over 5000... Curious?!?!? I didn't think I was that popular.
I checked into it, its mostly SPAM. It started out only in older posts but their are gaining on me, they have reached Nov. 14th, and by the time I get a chance to sit down and delete the bastards, they will have past me up and I will have to post for the SPAM comments.
So my question is WHY??? WTF, is the reason for filling up peoples comment boxes with ads for home morgage loans? Did I visit a website that triggered this? Why do other people get ads for Viagra and I get Home morgage loans? It doesn't seem fair.
So I will be spending my day off tomorrow wearing out the delete button, unless someone tells me there is an easier way...

I think the spammers search for sites running earlier versions of movable type.
There might be some way to do massive deletes directly to the database, but I've not gotten that deep into MT yet.
The first thing you need to do is either install a moderate option on your comments, or install blacklist.
I know another blog using an earlier version of MT. She had a friend install blacklist for her: http://hipmomma.com/

you need to have MT blacklist installed. I received the same spamming only my was on line casinos. Adelle at www.dellsdiner.com is a girlfriend who installed it for me. worked like a charm. just put in the offensive site or key word and press de-spam and it removes them all. good stuff.

Ok, I'll look into the blacklist thing. I've been trying different things on my site before moving on to others. I've gone through and closed the comments on all posts over a month old, for starters. If we upgraded to MT3.1 we'd have all kinds of neat options, but it would cost us so I haven't mentioned it. I'll see what I can find out about blacklist.
