The winds of change

I think I may turn vegetarian.

I have been thinking about this for awhile now. And I will need the support of everyone. I have been learning (not on purpose, mind you) more and more about what goes into our meat supply in America. And it really has got my attention. I listen to Coast to Coast every evening on the way home and visited this site once. (Once was enough!)

Now you wouldn't think that making this decision would really be this hard after what I have learned, but I come from a family of hunters and fishers. My Dad has know Jamie for a few years and still can't figure out why she doesn't eat meat. It was never a big deal to stopp eating pork and shellfish when Erik and I starting to get serious. (Because I never really liked the taste of pork and hated any thing that swims since I was really young.) But I do like Chicken and Turkey. Beef I can go either way, I may miss it on occasion.

I need advice from my fellow family members who are veggies... PLEASE!

How ironic!! I've was just telling Scott the other day that I was thinking about going veggie too. I'm like you - I really like turkey & chicken and beef I can go either way, but have missed it every now and then. I've never cook meat at home since I'm the only one that eats it, but I have bought meat for sandwhiches and stuff. I've just started ordering veggie when we go out & not buying meat. If you put your mind to it - you can do it, I know you can!!

Aunt Sue:

Well, there are a few of us veggies in the family and you know we always have veggie-alternatives at our get-togethers.

The reason that all the veggie-meat stuff came about in the first place, was to taste like the real thing so that people would have an easier time quitting. Of course, not everyone likes it, but some are better than others. It's a trial and error thing.

Come down here sometime and raid my pantry!! You know you will have our support!

There are 2 pera/teachers at HOPE who are vegetarian's and Rose, my aide, is also a vegetarian. We were talking to Nora (pera) yesterday and she said that a close relative of hers died of mad cow disease about 3 years ago. That did it for her. She was mad because on the news they were saying how this was the first outbreak in the US or something? And it was 3 years ago for her cousin, I think he was. She watched him deteriorate, step by step - it was awful!!

I found out that it isn't that hard to get free range, hormone and antibiotic free poultry here in town. So I may start there. No Beef, and poultry only on occasion (holidays). I do like veggies burgers, don't like them spongy dogs.. ;-P

You know you have my support. We can get together and cook something yummy and veggie out of the cookbook you gave me.

Having grown up vegetarian I can't really offer any advise. I've never known any other way. There are plenty of meat substitutes out there, some are good, some aren't. Start trying them and find out what you like. If you like veggie burgers (grillers), then you can get broken up grillers in bags at the grocery store and use them in place of ground beef when you're cooking. I personally like making hamburger helper stuff with it. Anyway, go for it.
